Hair transplantation is a permanent treatment for hair loss, and recent innovations
in the technique have made it simpler, more comfortable and natural-looking. On an
outpatient basis, using a local anaesthetic, we surgically transplant your own hair
from areas of permanent growth (such as the back of the scalp) into balding or
thinning areas. The number of sessions required varies, depending on the look you
want to achieve.
Hair and tissue is removed in a strip from the "donor area" of permanent hair along
the back and sides of the head. This area is immediately sutured closed and is
completely camouflaged by the surrounding hair. The removed hair follicles are
then divided into small pieces called grafts of varying sizes. These can range from
grafts as small as 1-2 hairs to usually no more than 4-5 hairs. The hair and its
roots are then inserted into the balding area where they will be able to grow.
Hair transplantation is an office procedure that takes approximately three to five
hours. Most people return to work a few days after the procedure. Most people
require between two to five sessions, spaced several months apart, to complete
hair restoration in an area.
Because Dr. Solish uses newer techniques with smaller grafts, the results will
yield a highly pleasing result. Smaller grafts in the front or hairline will allow for a
natural look. The hair is your own, and just like all of your hair it grows, can be
washed, coloured, permed, and styled as you desire. Once the transplants are
completed no special maintenance or care is needed.
In most cases immediately after hair transplantation the hair falls out of the grafts,
and does not regrow for about 3 months. After this they grow normally. With each
session more hair will grow resulting in thicker naturally looking hair.
Hair transplantation is not a very painful procedure. With newer
techniques in local anesthesia most people compare it to better
or as unpleasant as a visit to the dentist. After the procedure
mild pain pills are given and usually if taken are only required
for the first 12 -24 hours.
Women with localized thinning at the top of their heads or around the temples often
make good candidates for hair transplantation. It is important to discuss your
thinning hair with a dermatologist and/or an endocrinologist to make sure there is
no other treatable reason for your hair loss.
Hair transplant is a cost- competitive solution for hair loss. Other hair replacement
alternatives require additional maintenance over the years. The cost depends on
the amount of bald area that will need to be transplanted, and the desired
thickness. More grafts are necessary to cover more bald area. Because the
procedure is individual, we prefer to estimate costs individually.
